The Ovi-Catch captures Culex as well as other container-breeding species.
As the water ripens with the small amount of biological material (small handful of locally-sourced lawn clippings, dead leaves, or garden debris) it becomes more attractive to culex. They are attracted to stagnant pools of water where they try to lay their eggs on the surface. The AGO traps also provide cool, damp, protected locations that both males and females of both species are attracted to as a refuge from the sun.
It is best to use the traps in protected, shaded areas where mosquitoes are naturally attracted to as they seek harborage and refuge from the harsh environment around them. Gravid female mosquitoes fly into the opening on top of the unit and can't get down into the bucket where the water is because there is a fine screen blocking the way. They eventually land on the sides, which are lined with the coiled sticky board, and become stuck.
